The biggest delegation ever since the inaugural venture in 1976 will represent the Virgin Islands at the 41st Carifta Games in Hamilton, Bermuda on April 6-9.
The 16-member delegation was presented on Friday afternoon at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports during a media briefing that also included remarks from Dr. Marcia Potter, Ag. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture on behalf of MEC Minister Myron Walwyn and BVI Olympic Committee President Ephraim Penn.
The team includes nine athletes who have had previous Carifta Games experience and most of the athletes are in the Under-17 Division, where there are nine athletes — eight of them are girls.
Teh BVI Athletics Association officials said this is the strongest U-17 Girl’s team that has ever assembled, because it’s not just a team of sprinters, but include hurdlers, throwers and mid distance performers as well.
The team also includes three sets of siblings; twin sisters Tynelle and Trevia Gumbs, sisters Trarikah and Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner and the brother and sister combo of Tarique and Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses.
The 2012 Carifta Games delegation is comprised of the following: Under-17 Boys: Aundre Turnbull, long jump/high jump. Girls: Nelda Huggins, 100/200 metre; Trevia Gumbs, shot put, Tynelle Gumbs, javelin throw; Taylor Hill, 100/200 metres; Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, 800/1500 metres; Tarika Moses, 400 metres; Jonel Lacey, 100/300 metres hurdles; Deya Erickson, 100/300 metre hurdles
Under-20 Girls: Niayla Smith, 800 metres; Shiaian Vandenburg, 100/200 metres; Tarikah Warner, long jump/high jump. Boys: J’Maal Alexander, 100/200 metres; Shaquoy Stephens, 200/400 metres; Brandon Andrew, 110 metres hurdles/jeptathlon.
Coaches: Willis “Chucky” Todman, Eric Matthias, Steve Augustine, Winston Potter. Chaperone: Delva Thomas. Psychologist: Dr. Sylvia Simmons. Physiotherapist: Shaun Williams. Delegates: Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway and Dag Samuels.
