An 11-year-old girl and a man died after at least two scooter drivers opened fire on a vehicle on Wednesday night in West End, police said late Thursday morning.

The pair were taken to Peebles Hospital along with a female passenger and pronounced dead on arrival, according to the Police Information Office. The woman continues to receive treatment for injuries.

The girl was a back seat passenger in a vehicle driven by the man. Police are withholding all of the victims’ names.

The vehicle was on the West End public road in the area of the graveyard around 9:30 p.m. when at least two scooter riders drove up to it and opened fire, according to police.

“I believe that there are many in our community who are equally shocked, saddened and disgusted by this cowardly act and even more so that an innocent child was among the victims,” said Police Commissioner Michael Matthews. “More so, that there are people who live among us who would carry out such a contemptible act. My hope is that those who know the individuals responsible within this community will choose to speak out and not allow these perpetrators one more day of freedom than they deserve. Help us to identify these persons who carried out this heinous act.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Detective Inspector Joe Goff directly at 368-9342 or the police Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.

Other shootings

The incident was the third shooting reported this week.

A man was shot outside his home on Sandbox Road at about 8 p.m. on Monday, police said. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was being treated at Peebles Hospital, according to police.

And on Sunday night, a masked gunman fired shots into the air at a bar in Sea Cows Bay before stealing an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The man, who was alone, entered from the back of Isabella Bar at around 10 p.m., with his face partially covered and wearing a red shirt, according to police.
