A Johns Hole man was arrested and charged following an early morning shooting outside a “popular nightclub” in the Free Bottom area, police said yesterday.

Police did not name the nightclub, but they said they responded to reports of gun fire in its vicinity shortly after 1:45 a.m.

“Initial reports indicate that two masked individuals approached a group near the club, prompting one individual to flee into the establishment,” according to a police press release. “The masked individuals
then discharged several rounds.

A search of the surrounding area recovered eight spent shell casings: five 0.223 calibre and three 0.40 calibre.”

After further investigations, police said, they arrested Jamari Scatliffe, 22, and charged him with possession of a firearm with intent to put another in fear, unlawful possession of explosives, and attempted robbery.

“Gun violence has no place in our community,” said acting Police Commissioner Jacqueline Vanterpool. “The swift action by officers to investigate and bring charges in this matter reflects our continued commitment to ensuring public safety.”

Police didn’t provide further information about the incident, but they are asking anyone with information about the shooting or other crimes to contact their Intelligence Unit by calling 368-9339 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline by calling 800-8477 (TIPS) locally or 284-800-8477 from overseas.
