Omar Walker considered himself a “rude child” when was at the Elmore Stoutt High School. His disrespect toward school authorities at the time led him to drop out before earning his diploma, he said.

Mr. Walker is a changed man now.

On Tuesday, he was among 33 students who graduated from the Technical and Vocational Apprenticeship Programme during a ceremony at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

Mr. Walker earned a certificate in house wiring, and he hopes to obtain his high school diploma by next year.

“I am no longer a rude child,” he said as he made his way outside the auditorium to meet his family and friends. “I got tired of being disrespectful, and I wanted to do something to make my parents and teachers proud.”

Mr. Walker’s fellow graduates earned certificates in various vocations, including office skills, small engine repairs, air-conditioning and refrigeration, cooking, and plumbing.

Speakers at the ceremony urged the graduates to be dedicated to whatever they choose to do with their achievement.
