Though the 60th August Emancipation Festival will be shortened by five days, organisers are promising a grand time.

“Though Festival will be shorter, it will indeed be sweeter,” Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn said on Thursday during a press conference at the 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum.

The event was shortened on the advice of a committee formed last year to advise officials on Festival anniversary plans, Mr. Walwyn said.

New additions this year include a ceremony celebrating the history of Nottingham Estate and a grand finale with fireworks in Road Town.

Marvin Blyden, chairman of the Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee, said plans are well under way for the event, which he promised would be the “talk of the town for years to come.”
