Puerto Rico was devastated last week by Hurricane Maria, but leaders here don’t expect that to affect the aid coming into the Virgin Islands.

“We thought initially there may have been a problem, and we were considering other areas of getting our materials into the BVI,” Premier Dr. Orlando Smith said during a Friday morning press conference. “But I understand the airport will be open tomorrow.”

The airport did in fact open as yesterday as scheduled.

The centre of Hurricane Maria cut across Puerto Rico, killing at least 10 people, destroying hundreds of homes and other buildings, and knocking the entire island off the grid. Leaders there don’t expect electricity to be restored for months.
