The design is set and the materials are ready. Now, Virgin Islands artist Aragorn Dick-Read has traveled to China to make what he believes is the world’s largest fireball sculpture.
Mr. Dick-Read is one of 120 artists from around the world who are participating in the 11th annual Changchun International Sculpture Symposium this year. Since the event started in 1997, artists from 212 countries have built more than 500 sculptures for the city, according to the symposium website.
Mr. Dick-Read said the organisers saw some of his work posted on his website and invited him to take part this year.
He has been making his fireballs — intricately carved metal spheres in which he lights fires — at his Trellis Bay studio since 2001, when he made his first for an exhibition in London, he said.
