On a normal school day at the Elmore Stoutt High School, students aren’t allowed to wear coloured shoes.

For girls, dangling earrings are also prohibited, as are skirts that don’t reach the knees. Boys aren’t allowed to wear earrings at all, and braided hair is another no-no.

But on Friday, these rules were repealed. It was “Fun Day,” and the students were allowed to dress as they chose.

But there was a catch: In order to participate, they had to make a donation towards improving the school.

Most students took full advantage of the opportunity. There were winter boots, braids, dangling earrings, mini-skirts and shorts.

The event is a tradition on the last day of school in December, according to Donna Clyne-Thomas, ESHS vice principal of pastoral affairs.
