Lenn Lennard, who is currently serving a 30-month prison term, was sentenced last week to an additional 33 months for cultivating marijuana.

In handing down the sentence in Magistrates’ Court on Friday, Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards said the possession, sale and abuse of cannabis is on the rise in the territory.

The Crown alleged that police were informed of a suspected cannabis plantation in the area of Taylor Bay on Virgin Gorda.

While conducting an investigation, police allegedly saw Mr. Lennard and another man harvesting cannabis plants there.

Both men were arrested, and police said they seized about 3,000 plants amounting to 11.2 kilograms of cannabis.

During her sentencing, Ms. Richards said it was a “category one” plantation, “which is an operation capable of producing industrial quantities for commercial use.”

Mr. Lennard, a 38-year-old native of the Virgin Islands, is currently serving time for a separate incident on March 18, 2011, when police seized 3.4 kilograms of cannabis from his home.

When police entered the home during a search there was a strong scent of marijuana, and cannabis plants allegedly were found hanging from a clothesline in the kitchen.

The defendant, a father of two, is a construction worker. The 33-month sentence he received Friday will run following his current sentence.
