Nine years ago, Bradford Betzner almost lost his mother to breast cancer, he said, but she survived the disease and the experience strengthened the family.
He was among about 400 people who ran or walked from Manuel Reef Marina to Nanny Cay and back.
“It was much tougher than I had anticipated even though it was a flat course,” said Mr. Betzner, who was drenched with sweat and covered in pink powder when he finished the race.
At the start of the event, which is in its ninth year, the participants heard from two cancer survivors who recounted their experience with the disease.
Since the inception of the run/walk, the community’s support has steadily increased, said organiser Lisa Adamson.
Over the nine years of hosting the fundraiser, about $90,000 has been raised and 500 mammogram vouchers have been given to women in need, Ms. Adamson said.
Funds have also been used to provide financial assistance for women with breast cancer, and to provide vouchers for cervical cancer screening, she added.
