Forecasters are predicting 18 named storms in the coming hurricane season, which starts June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Nine of them are predicted to be hurricanes, four of them major.

“We anticipate an above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the United States coastline and in the Caribbean,” Colorado State University scientists Philip Klotzbach and William Gray said in a statement. “Coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for them, and they need to prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much or how little activity is predicted.”

The scientists also predicted a 61 percent chance of at least one major hurricane tracking into the Caribbean.

Last year’s season saw 19 named storms, though forecasters predicted lower numbers in advance.
