The Barbadian government has announced plans to build a waste-to-energy power plant at one of the island’s landfills, the latest example of a Caribbean nation using the technology to meets its energy and waste disposal needs.

The waste-to-energy plant, part of the $188 million Mangrove Pond Green Energy Complex to be located in the island’s southeast, will process 350 tonnes of solid waste each day, and generate 10 to 14 megawatts of electricity, according to a press release from Barbados Government Information Services.

In addition to the waste-to-energy plant, the complex will also rely on solar panels and wind turbines to generate an estimated 25 megawatts of electricity overall, the release stated. The plans, which were approved by Barbados’ Cabinet this month, also call for the facility to include a landfill gas management system. That system will capture methane and other gases produced by the landfill that can be measured and sold abroad in carbon trading markets, according to BGIS.
