A partially decomposed body was found in an abandoned building on upper Main Street on the afternoon of Aug. 1, according to a brief WhatsApp message issued the next day by Police Information Officer Diane Drayton.

“There is no evidence to suggest foul play at this point,” the four-sentence message stated. “However, investigations are ongoing. The body has not been positively identified.”

No further information was provided, and the Police Information Office did not provide an update in response to multiple requests this week.

House fire

Police are also mum on the identity of another body found in a burned house in the Red Bay area of East End on June 11.

The week after the fire, Ms. Drayton said police believed they knew the identity of the body, but they were awaiting DNA verification before releasing a name.

The verification was in process, but police weren’t sure when it would be complete, Ms. Drayton told the Beacon at the time.

No update has been provided since then, despite requests from the Beacon.
Officials also have not said what started the fire or provided further information.
