Take Me to My Paradise: Tourism and  Nationalism in the British Virgin Islands

Author: Colleen Ballerino Cohen

Pages: 270

Publisher: Rutgers University Press in 2010

Description: The book bills itself as an ethnographic study of the effects of tourism on Virgin Islands culture — an analysis of how the industry has changed the territory. It discusses the development of the tourism sector from the 1953 Hotel Aid Ordinance until the present. Other topics addressed include the evolution of the yacht charter industry and the effects of the opening of Little Dix Bay Resort in 1964 on Virgin Gorda. The book includes excerpts of the author’s field notes and interviews. It is dedicated to Kenne Hodge, a Virgin Islander poet who died in 2001. The Ministry of Education and Culture held a launching ceremony for the book earlier this month.

About the author: Ms. Cohen is a professor of anthropology and women’s studies at Vassar College. She has spent several weeks studying the territory each year since 1990 and previously served on the Board of Governors of H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
