Beach upgrades
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour will focus on improving facilities at beaches across the territory in 2014, including at Smugglers Cove, The Baths and Long Bay, Beef Island, officials said. Ronald Smith-Berkeley, the NRL permanent secretary, recently told legislators during the Standing Finance Committee deliberations that those beaches would receive first priority but that list would later be expanded. Deputy Premier Dr. Kedrick Pickering, the NRL minister, pledged last year that work would begin soon on bathrooms and vendor facilities at Smugglers Cove, but the planning and design stages are still under way. At The Baths, work on a permanent bathroom structure has recently resumed after a long delay. At Long Bay, the MNRL will ensure that facilities are developed far enough inland so they won’t be vulnerable to erosion, Mr. Smith-Berkeley told the SFC.
