The BVI has named a squad of 28 players to begin intense training in preparation for participating in the 2011 Leeward Islands Cricket Association tournament, scheduled to begin in September.

Those called to practice are: Johnny Bailey, Timon Robinson, Bront Defreitas, Earl Prescott, Sheldon John, Travis Jack, Maxford Pipe, Winston Clarke, Derrol Redhead, Dorian Auguiste, Daniel Singh, Keith Semple, Vijay Jhappan, Vishal Bharat, Monty Butler, Trent Belfon, Keelan Robin, Kevin Joseph, Neil Niles, Collis Frazer, Kwesi Sinclair, Dennisford Browne, Vaden Walker, Richard Fredericks, Dave Pyroo, Rodney Modeste, Jagnarine Persaud and Gerald Wlliams.

President of the BVICA Shan Mohamed said he is looking forward to having a strong team represent the territory in this year’s LICA tournament, which will feature two-day and one-day matches.

The two-day games are a change from the more traditional three-day matches. The one-day tournament is sponsored by NAGICO Insurances’ Regional Office, headquartered in St. Maarten.

The other teams in the tournament are Antigua, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, St. Maarten, USVI and Montserrat. The BVI’s first two-day and one-day games will be against USVI from Sept. 23-25.

The BVI Cricket Association has named Charlie Jackson as coach and manager of the team, and the first training session is scheduled for Saturday 3 September at 3 p.m. on the grounds of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
