An arrangement between a United States publishing company and a local business association provided for $97,000 to be spent on promoting the territory as a tourist destination in US newspapers, company officials said.

Each year the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association and HCP/Aboard Publishing produce Experience the British Virgin Islands, a hardcover book filled with articles and advertising about destinations in the VI. Dollars paid to buy ads in the book go to fund a print advertising campaign in 14 US newspapers, according to Bobbi Fawcett, the company’s on-island representative.

Ms. Fawcett said that the ads, which ran earlier this year, appear in the travel sections of newspapers owned by The McClatchy Company, the parent company of HCP/Aboard.
