Judy Petz, director of the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, knew better than to try to rent a car for her visiting sister this weekend, but she tried anyway.

Each time she requested a vehicle the response was the same: “You know it is regatta week,” the car rental employee would say. “You should have called earlier.”

After calling several car rental businesses, she found one.

“It is a little frustrating, but it is a good sign of the business that is coming on island,” Ms. Petz said.

The Sailing Festival got under way on Tuesday morning when more than 40 sailboats in four different classes raced from Nanny Cay to Bitter End. The sailors spent a day in North Sound and will return for the BVI Spring Regatta welcoming and registration party back at Nanny Cay today.

Organisers are predicting that more than 100 sailboats will compete in the BVISR, which starts on Friday in the Sir Francis Drake Channel.
