Under his government, the BVI Tourist Board will be the government’s marketing arm,

while developing the territory as a tourism destination will be handled by the Ministry of Tourism, Premier Dr. Orlando Smith said Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking at the first of what he said would be regular press briefings, Dr. Smith said Janis Braithwaite-Edwards, as the tourism liaison, will be the officer in charge of going “across ministries for the development of the tourism product.”

In the past, Dr. Smith said, the BVITB had been tasked with both developing the territory as a product and marketing it to potential visitors.

“We have now decided that the Tourist Board will concentrate more on marketing, which is what they should be doing,” Dr. Smith said.

Ms. Braithwaite-Edwards will work on a wide range of projects, Dr. Smith said: helping create a beach management plan with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour; assisting the Ministry of Communications and Works with the upcoming planned expansion of the Crafts Alive Village; and heading the Gun Creek Committee that seeks to redevelop North Sound, to name a few.
