The Virgin Islands Cadet Corps is now accepting applications for recruits for the new school year.

The Corps is open to ages 11-19 who want to “develop self-discipline, character and leadership skills,” according to a press release from the Police Information Office.

Captain Selwyn Rock, VICC commandant, said many youths have benefited from the regimented environment offered by the Corps.

“Our young people want the security of a more disciplined environment that, for whatever reasons, is not afforded in their lives,” Mr. Rock said. “They want to be held accountable and committed to order, self-control, restraint and obedience to authority that is lacking in many environments.”

He added that peer counselling is a major part of the VICC.

“New recruits benefit from the guidance and skills of those who have been in the Corps for years who now serve as leaders and are passing on the character virtues and the values of the Corps,” he said.

The Corps is also looking for male and female leaders who are at least 21 and who are able to commit at least eight hours each week to the programme. Overseas travel for training will be provided, according to the press release.

The deadline for new recruits is Sept. 30.
