Arthur Gordon Stollery, 64, a Canadian businessman staying at Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda, died while on a snorkelling outing Monday morning, officials said.

“He was part of a party of four that were out snorkelling yesterday near Devils Bay,” Police Information Officer Diane Drayton said Tuesday. “He noted to one of the members of the party that he was experiencing difficulty, so they were on their way back, when he apparently had problems.”

A doctor who was visiting the beach performed CPR, as did Virgin Islands Search and Rescue personnel, VISAR President Phil Aspinall said. A Virgin Gorda doctor then pronounced him dead, and he was transported to Tortola, according to Mr. Aspinall.

The Coroner’s Office has been notified and likely will schedule an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Ms. Drayton said.
