The Customs Department halted cargo discharge at Port Purcell for part of Tuesday in order to ensure safety after carriers broke rules there, according to government.

Customs Commissioner Wade Smith, who lifted the stoppage the same day, said that several attempts were made with carriers to re-establish a safe environment at the port for staff and customers. But because some of them didn’t comply, the department followed through on a previous threat to halt cargo discharge.

“Ample notification was given to all stakeholders involved before the decision to cease discharge of cargo was taken,” Mr. Smith said Tuesday. “But I am satisfied with the efforts made today to clear up a great portion of the area; hence we were able to resume discharge.”

Premier Dr. Orlando Smith said during a media briefing last week that his government has heard the public’s concerns about delays and other challenges at the port and is working to address them.
