Leaders from around the region plan to form two committees to create a unified response to revive the Caribbean’s stagnant economies.
At a meeting in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on Sept. 17, the leaders of 15 Caricom members agreed to form a “Commission on the Economy” that will focus on regional strategies for revival, according to Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who will lead the new group.
“It is generally known now that the issue of economic growth in this region has been on the front burner,” he said, according to the Jamaica Gleaner. “We thought we had to apply our minds to see how best we can put the economies back on a sustainable growth path.”
The commission will include two representatives from each Caricom country and will produce a report with its findings by the end of the year, according to Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who chaired last week’s summit.
“We also agreed that the commission should address the priority areas for fiscal sustainability, resource mobilisation, as well as critical economic infrastructure services, particularly energy and [Information Communication Technology],” she said, according to the Gleaner.
