Most people don’t like to hear that they’ve made a mistake, but often, that’s just what’s needed to take care of crucial service areas, said Cayman Islands Complaints Commissioner Nicola Williams during a visit to the Virgin Islands last week.

“If you have a healthy complaints process, as long as people can see it’s robust, it will benefit the ordinary resident and the officers receiving the complaints,” Ms. Williams said in an interview.

She had just completed making a presentation to police officials to advise them on handling their complaints. She said that during the presentation she encouraged the police officers not to fear complainants, because most of them have legitimate concerns.

What’s more, this healthy process will help the public trust police officers more, which in turn makes the job of policing easier, Ms. Williams said.
