In 14 days, work is set to begin on the Pleasant Valley Bridge in Palestina, which was severely damaged during the passage of Tropical Storm Otto in 2010.

On Tuesday, government inked an $819,848.58 contract with G-Unit Construction for the bridge repairs and drainage rehabilitation in the area.

The work is the first major project funded by the Caribbean Development Bank loan of $15.6 million approved by the United Kingdom in 2011, said Dr. Drexel Glasgow, government’s chief of infrastructure planning, research and development.

G-Unit, represented at the ceremony by Greg Hodge, was chosen through a “fair” tendering process, Dr. Glasgow said.

The company is scheduled to complete the work 180 days after commencement, with Systems Engineering Limited as the project manager, officials said.

G-Unit will be responsible for demolishing the existing structure and constructing a new bridge and drainage system, among other work, Dr. Glasgow said.

“This project also allows for the re-grading of the road approaches to the bridge as well as construction of a new culvert along Palestina/Pleasant Valley road and a section of the Drakes Highway,” Dr. Smith added.
