Green VI’s new glass studio in Cane Garden Bay was part sales floor, part classroom and part stage yesterday afternoon – and it has been more or less steadily since the organisation lit the furnace that gets hot enough to turn used beer bottles into liquid glass, said Jake Barron, master glassblower.

Cisne Benjamin, one of Green VI’s four apprentices, said she’s been in the studio most days since the furnace was lit late last month. Between helping customers, answering questions from curious passersby and building plates, glasses, paperweights and other glass items, they’ve stayed plenty busy, she said.

Soon, Mr. Barron said, they’ll be even busier. By the end of the month, he hopes to be teaching lessons in glass working in the studio behind Myett’s. The plan is for residents to have a lesson and build three pieces, which they’ll be able to take home, for about $60, Mr. Barron said.
