A 27-year-old charter captain for The Moorings died Sunday afternoon after he was pulled from the water near Norman Island, police said.

Oliver Wheatley, 27, a United Kingdom national who recently migrated to the Virgin Islands for employment, left his workplace as the captain of the vessel Wind Therapy with six guests and a chef aboard, police said.

He later entered the water near Norman Island. When he didn’t return to the boat, Virgin Islands Search and Rescue was contacted at 12:29 p.m., police said.

Mr. Wheatley was subsequently pulled from the water by snorkelers around 12:44 p.m., and he was taken to Peebles Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:19 p.m., according to the Police Information Office.
