The music that blared through loudspeakers at the Festival Village Grounds on Saturday night had dancehall, rap and even soca beats.

But the messages weren’t typical.

In “Divine Mathematics,” DJ Nicholas, a Jamaican singer and leader, told the gathering, “We come here fi get rowdy fi Jesus Christ.”

The concert was part of Youth Explosion, an interdenominational event facilitated in large part by Virgin Islands churches. The weekend of activities was designed to encourage young people to make positive decisions in life, according to organiser Theresa Felix.

More than 100 young attended Saturday’s concert, which featured almost a dozen performers.

The songs’ messages were mostly religious, and centered on positivity and motivation.
