A foul odour wafted from the stagnant ghut that Conservation and Fisheries Department staff members were cleaning on Friday afternoon.

The group, which also included employees of the Governor’s Office, was picking up trash beside the Queen Elizabeth II Park as part of the International Coastal Cleanup, which was officially observed on Saturday.

Throughout the weekend, other groups participated as well, cleaning Trellis Bay and other areas in Road Town, according to acting Conservation and Fisheries Officer Jasmine Hodge-Bannis.

On Friday, one volunteer was using a long stick to pick plastic bottles, Styrofoam cups and plates out of the ghut. While he worked, others picked up more garbage nearby.

At the end of the evening, they had gathered 18 large bags of trash.
