Police have warned the public to be on the lookout after seeing an influx of counterfeit currency.

Police Information Officer Diane Drayton said that during a stop-and-search operation last week, officers confiscated a “large quantity” of fake notes.

One man, who police did not identify, was arrested, questioned and charged.

Acting Police Commissioner Alwin James said there are more opportunities to circulate counterfeit bills now that fewer businesses are accepting debit and credit cards.

“We are encouraging banks, businesses and individuals receiving large quantities of cash to be on the lookout for counterfeit notes in the denominations of 50- and 100-dollar bills,” he said. “It is important the usual system for examining bills be put in place.”

Any banks or businesses that receive counterfeit or questionable bills are urged to contact police as soon as possible. Anyone with information about individuals in possession of or creating fake currency is also asked to contact the police Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.
