Organised crime, food security and climate change were among the topics Premier Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley discussed with his regional counterparts this week in Jamaica.
Mr. Wheatley attended the 49th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, which kicked off Sunday and wrapped up Wednesday in Montego Bay.
All 21 Caricom members and associate members were represented, according to government.
The event’s opening ceremony showcased Jamaica’s culture, featuring performances by some of the country’s most celebrated artists.
Outgoing chair
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, Caricom’s outgoing chair, called for deeper regional integration and solidarity between member states in order to confront global turmoil as a unified Caribbean bloc.
Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the incoming chair, listed the priorities he hopes to advance over the next six months, including working to dismantle criminal gang networks across the Caribbean.
Mr. Holness also stressed the importance of regional cooperation on climate resilience, food security and economic sustainability.

Mr. Wheatley delivered remarks on the VI’s behalf.
“This Caricom meeting is a strategic opportunity for the Virgin Islands to deepen regional alliances and advance critical national interests,” he said. “Tackling transnational crime and organised crime in the region to addressing environmental vulnerabilities, we are here to ensure the Virgin Islands’ voice is both heard and supported.”
The meeting was held under the theme “People, Partnerships, Property: Promoting a Secure and Sustainable Future,” according to government.
Deputy Premier Julian Fraser — the minister of environment, natural resources and climate change — was also away from the territory for the same period, though the government did not say why.
In their absence, Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer was appointed to carry out the functions of premier; minister of finance; minister of tourism, culture and sustainable development; and minister of financial services, economic development and digital transformation.
