A man appeared in Magistrates’ Court Monday on charges that he coerced a woman into his car with a machete, then brought her to his house and attempted to demand sex from her.

Miguel Pena, 37, a Dominican Republic national residing in Huntums Ghut, is charged with abduction, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, damaging property and being armed with an offensive weapon.

When Mr. Pena was interviewed by police, he said that the virtual complainant accompanied him willingly and that he armed himself with the machete to protect himself from one of her friends, according to Senior Crown Counsel Christilyn Benjamin.

Mr. Pena, who is represented by Richard Rowe, was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison after the Department of Immigration raised questions about his visa status.
