In the 12th annual National Sprint Championships, a sprint distance triathlon, husband and wife team Russell and Kat Crumpler won the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

It was their first triathlon in the Virgin Islands. Mr. Crumpler finished the 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and five-kilometre run in one hour and 19 minutes and 44 seconds, while his wife completed the same distance in one hour, 23 minutes and five seconds.  

The triathlon was held on Saturday at Sandy Spit, Sopers Hole. The event had a record turnout with 10 competitors in the Men’s Division, seven in the Women’s Division along with 10 teams.

The defending champions competed in the triathlon, but came up short against the newcomers. Richard Morgan, the men’s defending champion, crossed the finish line 45 seconds after Mr. Crumpler. Adrian Dale was third only 24 seconds behind Mr. Morgan.

The 2012 women’s champion Kay Reddy took fourth place.  Gillian Howe took second place 18 seconds behind Ms. Crumpler, while Natasha Ruscheinski was third.

Team Pacific Dragon (Hayley Berry, Dan Mitchell and Mark Jones) won the team category three minutes ahead of Deloitte 2, who were two minutes ahead of Deloitte 3.

Chris Ghiorse holds the course record of one hour, 13 minutes and 13 seconds set in 2011.
