Sunday marked the beginning of the 16th annual Customs Week, which goes through tomorrow under the theme “Communication: Sharing Information for Better Co-operation,” according to Government Information Services.

“We at Her Majesty’s Customs feel that it is quite fitting for us to employ such a theme to achieve some of our most critical mandates, which include revenue collection and preventing the importation of illicit drugs and other contraband,” Customs Assistant Commissioner Clinton Romney said.

Mr. Romney added that developing a sound internal and external communication strategy can “greatly assist” all law enforcement agencies.

Improved communication about the Customs Department’s “vital role” in international trade, economic prosperity and social development is among its goals for 2014, he added.

On International Customs Day on Sunday, the territory’s Customs Week kicked off with a service at the Church of God of Prophecy in Huntums Ghut.

Activities continued with K-9 demonstrations at Agape Total Life Academy, Francis Lettsome Primary School, St. George’s Primary School, Enis Adams Primary School and Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School.

Tomorrow an open house will be held at HM Customs Headquarters in Road Town from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be basketball games at the Baughers Bay court beginning at 8 p.m.
