Nearly 50 volunteers, plus police and other emergency responders, participated in the first ever simulation exercise involving a cruise ship Friday.

The drill was designed to test new regional procedures for responding to emergencies involving a large vessel, said Linton Leonard, DDM’s information and education manager, ahead of Friday’s exercise.

The scenario, which was revealed to participants over the course of morning, involved a cruise ship with sick passengers whose engine room caught fire.

Exercise participants included officials from the Department of Disaster Management, BVI Health Services Authority, Fire and Rescue Services and the BVI Tourist Board.
