“C’mon! You can do it, Holly,” Claire Potter encouraged her 18-month-old “island dog,” who was a bit reluctant to participate in the best-dressed competition at the BVI Humane Society Dog Show on Saturday at Captain Mulligan’s.

Holly, who only has three legs, was dressed as a pirate: She wore a black-and-white bandana around her neck, another bandana across her head, and a small aluminium cup covering the stump where her fourth leg used to be.

Ms. Potter adopted Holly from the BVI Humane Society last year. “I don’t really know what happened to her. Someone dropped her off with her leg cut off. Then a nice lady paid for her to get surgery,” Ms. Potter said, adding that the dog’s health has improved markedly since then.

The show also featured other categories, including Best Dog Handler, Best Large Mixed Breed, Best Terrier, Most Agile and Basic Obedience.

Carlos Abreu, a dog trainer from Puerto Rico who served as a judge, said most of the dogs were well behaved.
