Ten-year-old Richard Hariperasad was on the beach in Baughers Bay on Monday hanging out with his friends, but after noticing a group of Conservation and Fisheries Department staff members cleaning the shoreline, he decided to help out.

The group was there as part of events being held in advance of Earth Day, which will be celebrated globally on Sunday.

“It feels kind of fun helping them clean. There is a lot of junk here, and I saw them cleaning, and I also watched them cleaning on TV, so I decided to clean with them,” the Enis Adams Primary School student said.

Department staff are cleaning different coastal areas throughout the week, according to Cyanara Duncan, a CFD environmental education officer.

Earth Day also will be celebrated in Cane Garden Bay on Saturday, when Green VI will host a celebration at its glass studio and at Myett’s from noon until sunset. There will be glass blowing demonstrations, beach games, a treasure hunt and other activities.

On Virgin Gorda on Friday, Going Green on Gorda will partner with St. Mary’s School in cleaning Taylor Bay on VG. The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the beach.
