The community libraries in East End and Anegada are now open for regular hours, government announced last week.

The East End library closed for unexplained reasons in September 2019, leaving residents with no operational public libraries on Tortola.

The main library branch in Road Town shut its doors in early 2016 because of mould and other issues.

Though government later began work on a new library in Pasea Estate, the facility was converted into a temporary high school shortly after Hurricane Irma, and it still serves that purpose.

Deputy Premier Dr. Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley announced last month that plans for a national library and museum are in development, and that government would announce further details soon.

A Feb. 2 government bulletin states that the East End library is now open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Anegada library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Both facilities are closed on Sunday.

While the announcement didn’t list operational hours for the Virgin Gorda Community Library, it said the facility can provide information on request.

Visitors can contact the library in East End at 468-9750, in Anegada at 468-4991, and in Virgin Gorda at 468-9971.
