“This award will help me to develop my skills as a trombonist and to give me an opportunity to learn new things that can be beneficial to me,” Mr. Frett said while responding on behalf of the group during the ceremony. He is among 10 Virgin Islands youths announced as recipients of Emerging Fellows Awards during a ceremony last Thursday at the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens.

The award programme, which launched in 2012, is aimed at developing the skills of the territory’s youths, said Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn.

“Through programmes such as the Emerging Fellows Awards, we are creating opportunities for young people to reach their full potential and therefore avoid negative behaviour,” Mr. Walwyn said.

Since its inception, the initiative has awarded grants to 50 students, who have attended camps and other summer programmes on the arts, sports and academics.
