“Apocalypse” was the first word up at the secondary school finals in the National Spelling Bee Competition on May 10 at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

Bregado Flax Educational Centre seventh grader Ryan Ramlall nailed it.

The 11-year-old would keep it up throughout the contest, misspelling only one word on the way to capturing the first-place trophy.

During the competition, which lasted just under an hour, Mr. Ramlall went head to head against Cedar International School’s Aria Creque and Lekeisha Ramlall and Elmore Stoutt High School’s Khemisha Stoutt and Jade Straker.

“It was kind of scary being the only male, and I was nervous,” Mr. Ramlall said. “But I blocked everything out and I thought about winning, and that was the end result.”

After two rounds, Mr. Ramlall and Ms. Stoutt emerged as the top spellers and went on to three tie-breaking rounds.

On Monday, the primary school finals took place at the same venue. Agape Total Life Academy won first place, while Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School came in second.
