She survived a stroke and had to be hospitalised for six months at a United Kingdom hospital. Now, she has written a book about the experience.

During a ceremony held at the Central Administration Building breezeway on Thursday, family and friends gathered to watch as Shirley Kirwan launched The Healing Hand Of God.

In the book, the Montserrat native recounts her ordeal and encourages readers to rely on God.

The stroke, she said, almost killed her. “I wonder how I survived it, but it was God,” Ms. Kirwan said. “The ropes of death entangled me. Death laid a trap in my path.”

Since the book was published last month, the community has been receptive, according to the Elmore Stoutt High School English teacher. Of 550 copies that were printed, about 100 were sold at the launch, Ms. Kirwan said.
