A recent house explosion has prompted the BVI Fire and Rescue Services Department to warn the community about the dangers of improper storage of liquid petroleum gas.

On March 28, the department received a report of an explosion in a Chalwell home, which occurred at around 8:12 p.m., according to Government Information Services.

After conducting an investigation, fire officers confirmed that the cause of the fire was a gas leak from an LPG tank that was housed in an enclosed area along with a water pump.

When the water pump came on, it apparently generated an electrical spark that ignited a cloud of leaked gas, Deputy Chief Fire Officer William Penn explained.

“No injuries were sustained to the occupants of the residence,” Mr. Penn said. “However, doors and windows were blown out as a result of the explosion.”
