Governor Boyd McCleary has appointed Complaints Commissioner Elton Georges to lead an investigation into a letter originally sent from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to the premier, which was leaked to the public.

Mr. O’Neal said last month that he never received the Nov. 11 letter, which was being circulated among members of the public by mid-February. He also asked the governor to investigate the leak.

Mr. Georges, a former deputy governor, “will look into what happened to the letter and submit a written report of his findings to the governor,” according to a release issued by the Governor’s Office yesterday afternoon.

Opposition Leader Dr. Orlando Smith responded this morning. In a written statement, Dr. Smith expressed disappointment that the governor is “acceding to the premier’s frivolous call for an investigation into how a letter from the FCO to the premier ended up in the public domain,” while other questions regarding the Biwater contract and whether it creates a contingent liability for the VI government remain unanswered.

Dr. Smith had previously asked the governor for an investigation into government’s relationship with Biwater.
