Virgin Gorda youths learned boat handling techniques and other marine skills during the recent VG Fishermen Cooperative Annual Summer Programme, according to government.

The initiative, which is for ages 3-18, is in its 10th year.

During a closing ceremony on Saturday, Premier Dr. Orlando Smith said the skills taught in the programme are essential to the continued development of the tourism, marine and fishing sectors.

He told the students that the skills they learned this summer will help prepare them for different roles in the community.

Learning to fish and swim at an early age was in the past a norm for Virgin Islanders, Dr. Smith said, adding that he is pleased that the programme is helping this legacy continue.

This year the organisation honoured Bertrand Lettsome and Sam Davies, who continue to contribute to the initiative’s success, according to government.
