Joel Gumbs, a retired police force officer convicted of attacking his adult daughter before he kicked her out of his Fat Hogs Bay home, was fined $1,000 for common assault by Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards at the Magistrates’ Court on Friday, confirmed defence attorney Jamal Smith.

The defendant will spend two months in prison if the fine is not paid within one month, said Mr. Smith.

Police Information Office Diane Drayton stated on Monday that Mr. Gumbs- who was interdicted from the force following the July 2014 incident- has since retired.

The Crown claimed that Mr. Gumbs attacked the virtual complainant in her bedroom while they were arguing over personal family matters.

The defendant allegedly slapped the daughter repeatedly, pushed her down on the bed, squeezed her face and threatened to use his position on the police force against her.

Following the altercation, the virtual complainant and her mother left the residence, and police found them sleeping in a car the next morning.

Mr. Gumbs, who has no previous convictions, denied the allegations, and told the Magistrates’ Court in May 2016 that his matter was “wasting” the court’s time.
