When Rosanna Chichester competed for the crown of Miss BVI last August, her platform was cancer awareness.

She has personal experience with the topic: Her mother is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with the disease nearly 15 years ago.
Now, as Miss BVI, Ms. Chichester often preaches the need to eat healthy food, exercise regularly and get medical checkups to help prevent the disease.

On Friday, she joined about 200 other residents at the first BVI Cancer Society Masquerade Gala, where funds were raised to assist residents living with cancer.

In the courtyard at Government House, masked participants milled around as emcee Zoe Walcott-McMillan cracked jokes and enticed them to pledge money.
