A man got up from the poker table at the BVI Humane Society’s Gaming Night after his king-high lost to a set of nines. He had spent the last $40 worth of his chips.

“At least it’s for the puppies,” he said with a grin before saying goodnight to the rest of the players.

Besides poker, attendees could also play blackjack or roulette, or bet on the crab races – what volunteer Enda Ruffell-Smith called the most popular event.

Winnings could be traded in for a variety of prizes, including jewellery, household appliances, stuffed animals, and wine and spirits that were on display in a giant tent near the venue, Peg Leg’s Restaurant at Nanny Cay.

Money raised on Saturday night is being collected to build a new animal shelter that will house and treat not only puppies, but also cats, iguanas, goats, and any other animals in need, said Humane Society board member Nancy Woodfield-Pascoe.

The shelter, which will be built at Josiahs Bay, has been in the works for more than a decade.

Ms. Woodfield-Pascoe said the society recently raised enough money – $150,000 – to purchase a one-acre plot of land, but it now needs to raise about $600,000 to build the actual structure.
