Model citizens between the ages of 10 and 20 who excel in academics, the arts or athletics have a chance at funding to help them develop their gifts as well as their leadership abilities thanks to government’s $50,000 Emerging Fellows programme.

Six Virgin Islands students will be selected for the programme, which will fund trips to camps or training in their field, said Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn at the launch of the programme on Thursday.

But it won’t be a free ride.

In exchange for the opportunity to travel abroad to develop their skill or talent, the students selected will be expected to be youth ambassadors for the territory. And the competition will be fierce.

“Talent will not be enough,” Mr. Walwyn said, adding that the students will be expected to demonstrate a healthy attitude and a commitment to the territory.
