Police arrested a 21-year-old man and seized a handgun after responding to a report of an attempted armed robbery shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday in Lower Estate, they said.

“It was reported that a lone masked male armed with a handgun accosted another male in an attempt to steal jewellery from his person,” police stated in a Monday morning press release. “The quick actions of the police led to the recovery of a nine-millimetre semi-automatic pistol with a magazine containing three live rounds and the arrest of the assailant.”

Jahnoi Frank, of no fixed place of abode, was subsequently charged with attempted robbery, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, carrying a firearm without a licence, and possession of explosives, police said.

As of Monday morning, Mr. Frank was in police custody pending his appearance in court at the next available sitting, police said.

The injured victim, they added, was treated and released from the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital.

Police Commissioner Mark Collins commended the officers for their “bravery and quick and effective response,” according to the press release.
