A lone gunman “forced his way” into a construction firm’s office on Virgin Gorda on Friday afternoon, reportedly attempting to steal money intended for construction workers.

Police — who did not identify the firm — confirmed Monday that when the masked assailant arrived at the site on Towers Road, the money was not yet there.

Instead, the gunman fled the premises with the personal funds of one staff member and a construction worker.

Police said the suspect has a dark complexion and is approximately 6 feet tall. He was reportedly wearing all black, with a mask on his face.

VG officers are still in “active pursuit” of the man, they said.

Anyone with information about the identity of the suspect is asked to contact the VG Police Station directly; call 311; or call the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.

“All information will be held in the strictest confidence,” Police Information Office Diane Drayton wrote in a press release about the incident.

Police said they continue to encourage businesses to use cheques or direct bank deposits rather than giving cash to workers on site.

“When large amounts of cash must be transported or held in a location, persons are asked to seek the advice or assistance of police,” the release said.
